No doubt the world is currently going through unprecedented times as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has impacted our daily living so significantly and it seems even when things get better it may never return to the pre-COVID-19 era. There will be a new normal where people will always be extra conscious human-human interactions to prevent further spreading of the disease. Since the pandemic has been going on for the past 5 months, I wanted to do a quick wellness check on how to cope with all the associated stress and hassles.

Many aspects of our lives have been affected by COVID-19, first is mental health, many people are now having anxieties and fears due to unpredictable outcomes and potential consequences of disruption to their normal routines. Some people have lost their jobs and wondering daily when they will be able to return to work. The health care workers and other front line workers are overworked and stressed out because of all the extra precautions they need to take to avoid contracting the virus at work. Some parents are working from home while taking care of little children and or supervising their kids on homeschooling. I'm sure everyone can relate with at least one of these scenarios. This is why self care is very important. We need to take conscious effort to avoid negative effects on our mental health and find ways of de-stressing in this difficult times, such as journaling, meditation and prayers, listening to music and getting enough sleep.

Apart from mental health, there is also the aspect of physical health, since most people are home-bound, there is limited physical activity. This may lead to unnecessary weight gain. While staying at home, make sure to engage in minimum 30 minutes exercise five times per week. This could be inform of walk around your block, indoor youtube work out videos or walking up and down your staircase if you have one. It is also important to avoid over eating due to proximity to the kitchen and fridge. So healthy diet and exercise are very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

In conclusion, as businesses are beginning to reopen, more people are going back to work, please do not forget the basic recommendations for staying safe such as social and physical distancing, wearing face masks, frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizers. And more importantly staying home when sick. Stay safe and keep strong. We shall all come out on the other side of the pandemic strong and free.
